The second mobility of our project was held between 15-19 April 2024 with the participation of 80 students and 12 teachers from project partner institutions. The project consisted of a total of 5 working days, including 2-days of conferences, 2-days of cultural and social trips, and a 1-day closing and final declarations of conferences. The main topic of our conferences were environmental issues. In this context, students formed 3 main committees, considering the United Nations committee structure, and carried out committee work in these committees, representing the countries previously assigned to them. These committees:
- United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)
- UN-HABITAT
- Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF)
Relevant issues were discussed in these committees and resolution papers were published at the end of the conference.
As a result of the conferences:
- Equality of opportunity in education has been created by including students who cannot attend the conferences economically in the project activities.
- Participants' creative self-thinking, cooperation and communication skills have increased.
- Participants' productivity and leadership skills have increased
- Participants' linguistic skills have increased.
- Participants' knowledge of diplomacy culture has increased.
- Participants have searched for information on the environment and climate change and develop ideas for solving these environmental problems.
- Civil engagement behaviour of the participants in world problems have increased
- As the participants have participated in a multinational environment, cultural fusion of the participants has increased.
- Participants have published final declarations at the end of the conferences and these declarations will be shared with policy-making local and international institutions such as the United Nations, and it will be ensured that these institutions create public opinion in solving current problems and develop effective solution-oriented policies.
- Participants will share their achievements with the surrounding schools and educational institutions through local activities such as seminars, conferences and meetings, and will increase the number of local or international MUN conferences.
The Resolution papers of the Committees
United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)
Agenda item: Discussing standards regarding earthquake preparedness and a framework on international support.
Signatures: New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Morocco, Slovenia, China, Libya, Vietnam, Algeria, Argentina, Canada, Greece, England, Germany, Iceland
- to ensure requirements before and after an earthquake country will
a) implement legal regulations to not build structures around volcano areas and high-risk areas,
b) update the building codes so structures can resist earthquakes
c) teach people how to act in case of an earthquake from a young age,
d) warning systems be produced, and these will be made compatible with all software
e) provide search and rescue teams immediately
To provide that internal affairs mix with international assistance there’s a thing we should do;
do not mix local authority with experts, local authorities are not as trained as experts are, it would be better if the two split up and do what they are good at.
2. To ensure the goals of the Sendai Framework will be achieved, country;
a) understand disaster risks,
b) strength disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk,
c) invest in disaster risk education for resilience,
d) enhancing disaster preparedness for effective responses and to “Build Back Better” in the recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.
e) invest in strengthening institutional capacities at all levels to implement disaster risk reduction measures effectively.
f) raise public awareness about disaster risk, preparedness measures, and the importance of building resilience through education, communication campaigns, and community engagement.
3. To provide goods to the regions after an earthquake, member countries
a) can use air transportation like drones to take general goods there such as food and water,
b) can use helicopters to take more food to the places which were damaged by the earthquake.
c) strengthen airports to use them in emergency cases such as earthquakes to deliver aid and make them safer and more stable,
d) Create storages which includes necessary goods such as food, tents, water, and clothes in rural areas to use in emergency cases such as earthquakes
4) Relocation to a safer, non-quake-prone region can help in finding accommodation, food and drink for people struck by the disaster. Basic medical aid would be provided by The Red Cross, UN and other charity organizations.
Victims of an earthquake need to be not only physically catered to but also psychologically & emotionally to not lead to trauma in elders and children. We could also provide field schools for children to make the situation less alarming and keep overall stress level low, which is crucial in such a disastrous event,
5) The UN can engage in diplomatic outreach to encourage countries to join international treaties and fulfil their commitment. For example, high-level meetings and public diplomacy campaigns to raise awareness about the benefits of joining the UN. Also, the UN can offer incentives and rewards to countries that fulfil their commitments, for example, financial assistance. And for the countries that lack resources, or technical expertise, the UN can provide training and technical assistance,
6) To maintain security and stop loot after an earthquake, member countries can,
a) create a unit to increase security which includes a few soldiers and police,
b) instead of forcing people to leave the wrecked areas, make sure that the structures in the areas are ready to withstand any possible earthquake without any problems,
c) create punishments for loot in the regions of earthquakes.
